Box Score Maryville College fell to USA South top-ranked Berea College on Wednesday night, 83-62, as the Mountaineers took control with second-chance points and points off turnovers.
Maryville saw a trio of players score in double figures, as Courtney Carruthers, Abbi Joseph and Klaire Varney combined for 44 total points. However, Berea managed to outrebound the Scots 45-24 on the night, as MC committed 19 total turnovers.
The Mountaineers boasted 20 points off the Scots' miscues, while the squad managed to turn 17 offensive boards into 21 second-chance points.
Berea jumped out early in the first quarter, taking a 20-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The Mountaineers shot a blistering 53.3 percent, while tallying four 3-pointers to take the lead.
The visiting school would not shoot below 50 percent in either the first, second or third quarters.
Maryville regained momentum in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field. The two squads matched each other that quarter, as the Orange and Garnet trailed by nine, 40-31, at the break.
Berea took control for good in the third quarter, as the Mountaineers outrebounded the Scots, 12-5, in that stanza. They shot 11-of-20 for a 55-percent effort, as they recorded 10 second-chance points on four offensive boards.
Maryville managed just four field goals in that third quarter, falling behind 67-46. Mountaineer freshman Aaliyah Hampton boasted 12 of her game-high 32 points in the third quarter.
MC (14-6, 7-2 USA South) was paced by Carruthers who tallied 17 points, three assists, two rebounds and a block. The freshman also added a pair of treys, while going 3-of-4 at the free-throw line.
Joseph – a fellow freshman – added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She had four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal on the night, while junior Klaire Varney added 13 points, five steals and a pair of rebounds and assists each.
Kelley Wandell had five points and a team-high seven boards with three steals, while Shelby Hix had four points and two assists. Elsa Eckenrod had three points and three rebounds, while Libby Gardner, Hannah Jones and Hayley Harmon had two points each. Garnder had six assists, while Holland Jerrolds added three of her own.
MC shot 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) from the floor on the night, while adding five treys at a 29.4-percent clip. The Scots went 11-of-16 at the free-throw line, while tallying 18 assists on 23 made field goals.
Berea (18-2, 11-0) shot 47.7 percent (31-of-65) on the night, as the bucketed a dozen 3-pointers at a 46.2-percent rate. The squad also went 9-of-10 at the charity stripe.
Hampton had her game-high 32 points, while shooting 13-of-20. She went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, while dishing out five of Berea's 15 assists. Hampton had three steals and a pair of rebounds to her credit.
Bailee Hanover added 14 points and three rebounds, while Desginy Combs had nine. Bethanie Williams, Leah Parker and Kristen Barnes had seven points each. Destanie Love added 15 rebounds to Nakeisha Greene's 10.
Maryville will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Scots travel to Agnes Scott College for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff in USA South play.
