Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball team cruised to their second straight 95-point plus scoring performance defeating Wesleyan College (Ga.) in a USA South challenge by the score of 95-63 on Friday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots pulled away in the second quarter with a 57-percent shooting effort from the floor that featured eight points from Courtney Carruthers and five from Abbi Joseph both coming off the bench. While knocking down 8-of-14 shots, Maryville held the Wolves to only 12 points.
Maryville expanded their 42-28 halftime advantage after Klaire Varney exploded for 10 points while recording four steals in the third quarter. MC shot a torrid 53-percent from the floor, but Wesleyan kept pace hitting 9-of-15 shots (60-percent).
Going into the final period with a 71-49 lead, Kelley Wandell and Hannah Jones took over in the paint combining for 10 points on a collective 4-of-7 shooting. The Scots closed the game hitting 56-percent of their shots while Wesleyan knocked down only 29-percent of their attempts.
Wesleyan (1-24, 1-14 USA South) finished hitting 43-percent from the floor. They were paced by Natera Perkins' 16 points while Jamila Ra-Hashim added 12 points.
Maryville (17-7, 10-5 USA South) had five players contribute double digits in the scoring column while hitting almost 52-percent from the floor. Courtney Carruthers finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting connecting on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Klaire Varney posted a double-double with 12 steals and 20 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Varney was 8-of-13 from the floor. Shelby Hix and Abbi Joseph each tossed in a dozen points with Joseph adding nine rebounds. Kelley Wandell was 5-for-8 from the floor for 13 points while bringing down seven boards. Elsa Eckenrod helped MC claim the battle of the boards 47-28 while grabbing nine rebounds.
Maryville will host USA South foe Agnes Scott College on Saturday with a scheduled 2:00 p.m. tip-off. Head Coach Darrin Travillian and his staff will honor seniors Libby Gardner and Kelley Wandell just before the starting lineups are announced.
