Maryville College Tennis opened the 2020 spring season on Friday night, as the Scots fell to Covenant College in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The men's squad fell to the Georgian Scots, 8-1, while MC's women's team was swept by Covenant, 9-0.
The Orange and Garnet's Carson Mattila picked up the lone win on the night inside Strang-Voges Tennis Complex. He won the sixth-seeded match against Tristian Smallwood, 7-4, 4-6, 1-0. He won in the heated tie breaker, 11-9.
Josh Fisher took three points from Cameron Cortman, while Mateus Coling and Kyle Shaver went to an 8-2 score in doubles play.
In women's play, Kayla Zimmerman and Anastasia Dunn forced extra play in the top-seeded doubles match with Esther Eddy and Madelyn Savage. Covenant edged MC in the tiebreaker, 7-4, while Zimmerman took three points away from Eddy in the top-seeded singles match.
Maryville's match against University of Virginia-Wise was postponed for Saturday, Feb. 29. The Scots will return to action on Friday, March 6, as they host Warren Wilson at 3:00 p.m.
