Maryville College senior right-hander Jordan Davis stifled Brevard College hitters on Saturday with a complete-game five-hitter to help the Scots defeat the Tornados 6-1 to open a key USA South Athletic Conference series in Brevard, North Carolina.
Davis struck out a dozen of the 34 Tornados he faced advancing to 3-1 on the season.
Sophomore shortstop Gabe Lopez paced MC's eight-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort.
The Scots posted a trio of runs in the fourth inning when Alden Wright drove home Derek Hurt with an RBI single. A Will Hubbell double to the opposite field pushed Wright across the plate before Kolton Hicks directed a back door RBI single to score Hubbell, giving MC an early 3-0 advantage.
Maryville tacked on a run in the fifth inning before adding a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning. MC took advantage of a Brevard miscue making the score 6-0 entering into Brevard's final offensive inning.
Davis closed the door after Brevard's Beau Shealy tripled down the right-field line scoring JJ Wilkes.
Derek Hurt and Will Hubbell each drove doubles for the Scots while Gabe Lopez legged out a triple.
Maryville advanced to 10-5 overall with the victory while advancing to 4-3 in USA South play. Brevard falls to 2-12, 1-6 in league play.
