The Maryville College baseball team tallied an amazing 25 hits in securing their sixth consecutive victory, defeating Brevard College 17-9 on Saturday afternoon in Brevard, North Carolina.
The Scots lit up the scoreboard in the second inning when Will Hubbell deposited his first collegiate home run over the left-field wall.
Maryville exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Alden Wright recorded a pair of RBI with an opposite-field double. Wright scored on a Hubbell single. Jack Shuttleworth plated Kolton Hicks with an infield single before Gabe Lopez drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch RBI. Wright finished off the inning with his 4th RBI of the frame with a single through the left side scoring Lopez and Jimmy Meredith.
Brevard answered with six runs in the fourth capitalizing on a Maryville miscue.
With Maryville leading 9-6, the Scots added a run in the fifth when Ian Campbell scored on a double play.
MC's four-run advantage was whittled away in the fifth when Brevard tallied a trio of runs on three hits off MC reliever Andrew Miller.
MC led 10-9 after the first five innings and left-hander reliever Anthony Rodriguez simply closed the door for his second save of the season. Rodriguez shut out the Tornados over the final four innings allowing only one hit while striking out four.
The Scots added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth when Jack Shuttleworth and Ian Campbell posted key RBI attacks. Cody Gregory added an RBI single in the seventh making the score 13-9.
Maryville closed out the second game of the series with four runs in the ninth inning. Alden Wright, Will Hubbell, and Kolton Hicks each drove home runs to finish off the Scots' 17-run offensive attack.
Ian Campbell paced MC's offense going 5-for-6 with a pair of runs scored. Will Hubbell added a 4-for-6 effort at the plate with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Gabe Lopez, Derek Hurt, Alden Wright, and Jack Shuttleworth each tallied a trio of hits. Wright finished with a game-high five runs driven in.
With the 25-hit attack, Maryville is presently hitting .354 on the season.
"It was a great team effort today for both games," stated MC Head Coach Clint Helton. "These guys are locked in and playing hard for each other. They have had a relentless effort playing hard for all nine innings each challenge. We just focus on controlling what we can control and playing for the team. A lot of standout performers could be named for individual efforts but it's about the team and doing everything we can do to give ourselves a chance each outing."
Maryville (11-5, 5-3 USA South) will complete their USA South series at Brevard (2-13, 1-7 USA South) on Sunday. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
