Maryville downs Brevard for second-straight USA South sweep, 11-3

Maryville College posted 10 hits and 11 runs on Sunday, as the Scots picked up their second-straight USA South Athletic Conference sweep with an 11-3 win over Brevard College.

Sunday's victory marks the seventh straight for the Orange and Garnet, as the squad moves to 12-5 overall.

Gabe Lopez led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring three runs and batting in a pair more. Alden Wright was 2-for-5 with a trio of RBI, while Will Hubbell, Luke McLemore and Ian Campbell scored two runs each in the sweep.

Sophomore Damian Lusby moved to 2-0 on the season, pitching seven complete innings of three-hit ball. He allowed just one earned run, as he struck out a pair. Jacob Hanson and Trevor Townsend finished the game to preserve the USA South sweep.

Maryville got the scoring started in the top of the first. An error and a pair of passed balls allowed Jimmy Meredith to score, before Alden Wright's RBI single up the middle plated Lopez who walked. After one inning, Maryville led 2-0.

A pair of back-to-back singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Maryville in the top of the second, before Lopez roped a two-RBI single through the right side. Campbell and McLemore scored to give MC a 4-0 advantage early.

Campbell kept things going in the fourth inning, as he walked and stole second. Meredith scored hit with an RBI single to center. Lopez singled, before Derek Hurt was hit-by-pitch to load the bases for the Scots. Wright singled to short for a pair of RBI, scoring Lopez and Meredith for a 7-0 MC lead.

Maryville's offense would continue rolling in the top of the fifth, as Hubbell homered to left field to lead off the inning. A pair of walks and a pair of passed balls would allow McLemore to score for a 9-0 Scots' lead.

McLemore added an RBI single to score Hubbell in the seventh, before an error in the top of the eighth allowed Lopez to score for a commanding 11-0 lead.

Zachary Allison's RBI scored Joc Pledger who walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth for Brevard. JJ Wilkes added an RBI double down the left-field line to score Allison, before B Johnson's RBI groundout scored Wilkes. That gave MC the final, 11-3.

Maryville (12-5, 6-3 USA South) saw McLemore follow Lopez and Wright with a 2-for-5 day with two runs and an RBI. Meredith was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, while Hubbell was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Campbell went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Brevard (2-14, 1-8) was paced by Jason Jucker's 2-for-4 afternoon. Allison and Wilkes each went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, as Tristan Robinson was 1-for-1 to round out the Tornadoes five-hit attack.

Maryville will look to continue their winning ways, as the Scots host a non-conference double header on Wednesday, March 11. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Scotland Yard.
