Box Score Sipos Scores Twice in First Road Win
BREVARD, N.C. – Maryville needed a big road result, and the Scots came through with one of their finest efforts of the season in a 3-0 blanking of Brevard.
It was Maryville's first true road victory of the season.
Maryville limited Brevard to a single shot attempt – one – and that came in the closing moments with the outcome long decided. The Scots finished with a 20-1 edge in shots and a 16-0 advantage in shots on goal. Ball possession also went to Maryville by a 64 percent to 36 percent margin.
Head coach Pepe Fernandez poured on the praise.
"Our back three were fantastic," Fernandez said. "They were tough, relentless and determined not to allow chances. We came into this match focused on taking risks and putting them in as many 1v1 situations as we could, and we asked them to play on the offensive side with poise and courage.
"Hailey Cartt and Macy Lindsey and a host of mids' dominance in the midfield was great, and the forwards all moved as a well-organized unit. This team has been working hard to get thing clicking, and tonight they put it together against one of the toughest defensive teams in the conference."
Two Goals Quickly
Maryville scored first in the 18th minute after a nice bit of teamwork.
Kelsey Green played the ball to Sierra Lee at the top of the penalty area, and Lee headed it to a streaking Cartt. Cartt drew the attention of the goalkeeper and then tapped it ahead, where Bailey Sipos poked it home into the open net just ahead of her defender.
A little over three minutes later, Maryville pressed for a second. After an initial Brevard stand, Lindsey swiped an outlet pass and fired from a good 25 yards out to beat the goalkeeper to the right post for a 2-0 cushion.
Shots at halftime were 15-0 Maryville, and possession time was 68 percent for the visitors.
Sipos removed all doubt when she completed her brace in the 68th minute. Delaney Muldoon sent a pass forward just shy and right of the penalty box. Sipos made the play and then cut left, which cleared the path for her to fire from just outside the area and it clanged home off the left post.
Sipos with her two goals reclaimed the team lead with eight. Lindsey's goal was her fourth, while Cartt pulled into a tie for the team assist lead with her fourth.
The win bumps Maryville (4-2-0) into a second-place tie with Piedmont (4-1-0), although the Lions have a match in hand and hold the tiebreaker against Maryville. Both teams have 12 points, one point behind the 13 by Huntingdon (4-1-1). Brevard is now 3-2-1.
The Scots play a nonconference match against Asbury (3-8-1) on Friday at 5 p.m. They have USA South matches remaining at Berea and home against LaGrange for Homecoming on Oct. 23.
Maryville improved to 7-6-2 for the season and 1-4-1 in road matches (1-1 neutral), while Brevard saw its five-match unbeaten streak end and the Tornadoes stand 5-6-3.
