Maryville Posts 5-4 Win over Miss. U.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville Tennis showed just how much improvement was made this fall by posting a pair of 5-4 victories over the weekend against Mississippi University.
Both Scot teams pulled out wins despite fielding only five team members per squad, which meant forfeiting one doubles point and one singles point before the first serve was struck.
But the two Maryville teams split the remaining doubles matches and won four singles matches to tip the scales in the Scots favor.
The No. 4 singles players on each team, Eliza Cheshire on the women's side and Jonah Hedges on the men, clinched the deciding points.
"My match was the best one I have played yet this season," Cheshire said. "I loved the cheering from all the supporters and my teammates in the last set. Hitting the match winning point was very exciting. I loved that my teammates ran up at the end of the match and hugged me."
Kyle Shaver won his singles match at No. 1 and teamed with Cooper Newman to take a crucial doubles point as well.
"I was really pleased with the results and how our team fought despite going into the match having to forfeit two spots," Shaver said. "We have grown a lot over the past month, and the players have all worked hard in order to put the team in position to win even though most of them are relatively new to the sport."
Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said this weekend's result will do wonders for off-season momentum.
"To not only grow in the last few weeks but to have a tangible result to show for it helps them realize how far they have come," he said. "I kept telling our team that we just wanted to see how far we could come from the first fall match. Whether it was a win or a loss, we just wanted to see improvement.
"It was a great way to end the fall, and we need to carry this momentum and enthusiasm into the off-season."
