Maryville's Comeback Falls Short to Capital

Scots Drop Contest 69-62

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Showing great fight, the Scots staged a comeback that barely missed the mark in their first game of the Transylvania Classic falling 69-62 to Capital.

The largest lead for the opposition, 17 points, came at the 6:02 mark in the second quarter before a Courtney Carruthers 3-pointer stopped the run by CU. Carruthers led Maryville in scoring with 18 and had a career-high eight steals.

Going into the third quarter the Scots were down 34-27 and looking to pull closer to Capital. A Jordan Heifner layup pulled Maryville within four with a little under three minutes left in the quarter. CU rallied back to take an 11 point lead into the fourth.

The Scots outscored the opposition 22-18 in the fourth quarter and made a game of it late. Patience was key as Maryville chipped away at the lead in the final quarter. The comeback came to a head with 2:13 left in regulation as a Carruthers steal led to a Heifner jumper that cut the lead to two at 62-60. 

Free throws made up the rest of the game from that point on with the teams combining to take 12 shots from the charity stripe.

Capital prevailed in the contest 69-62 to close out the first day of the Transylvania Classic. 

Milestone Achievements

Senior guard Elsa Eckenrod continued her impressive steak by going over the 500-rebound and 200-assist marks. The McMinnville, Tenn., native had a team-high seven rebounds, which places her with 504 for her career. She handed out four assists to reach 203 in that category.

Eckenrod scored 17 points in the game for her fourth straight double-digit score sheet. 

Season-Best Marks

The Scots team as a whole turned in three season-high statistical performances. Maryville had a 2021-22 season-best in assists with 20 and steals with 16. Shots from deep also fell at a season-high rate as the eight made 3-pointers tied the best mark set earlier this year.

As a team, Maryville led in fastbreak points 12-2, points off turnovers 20-12, and in bench points 26-4. 

Heifner reached a career-high in assists with eight and tied her career-best in steals with six. The guard also chipped in 16 points.

After the loss, the Scots fall to 4-7 overall heading into tomorrow's matchup with John Carroll. Capital moves to 3-8 after their first game of the in-season classic.

Laney Murphy led Capital with 23 points followed by Brooke Ommert with 20 and nine boards.

Maryville closes out Transylvania Classic play Tuesday against No. 3 John Carroll. The Blue Streaks fell to host No. 11 Transylvania University earlier Monday 83-75 and are 7-2 on the season.
