Box Score Scots Double-Double in 61-67 loss
MARYVILLE – A streak was broken, but unfortunately it was for Maryville's opposition on Saturday afternoon.
The game went into overtime but Covenant was the team that came out victorious in the 67-61 USA South contest. It was Covenant's first win in the series since January 2002 which stretched over 23 games.
"It was the second game in a row where we faced an overtime situation and we came out flat," said Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian. "Our opposition came out with more energy which set the tone.
"We had chances where we could have gone up double-digits in the game but we turned the ball over and game them extra possessions. It put us on our heels."
Maryville had control in the first quarter with 16 points to Covenant's eight. It was a balanced attack for the home Scots as six players contributed points for Maryville in the opening quarter. The lead held for the home team as the next two quarters were even in scoring for both teams.
It was not until the fourth quarter that Covenant started to rally back and challenge for the lead. Using two late 3-pointers, the visiting Scots tied the game at 54-all at the end of regulation to force overtime.
After Covenant scored eight unanswered points to open the overtime, Hannah Jones got Maryville on the board with a layup and Elsa Eckenrod followed that up with two free throws to cut the deficit to four.
Covenant held on and took the win 67-61.
Big Night for Jones
Senior Hannah Jones tallied career-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds to earn her first double-double in a Scots jersey. She led Maryville in both categories and also tallied two blocks.
"This is what we have been hoping to see from Hannah,' said Travillian. "She can come out and make those kinds of plays for us consistently. She played her heart out tonight."
Jones was joined in double-figure scoring for the Scots by Courtney Carruthers who had 20 points for the Scots.
Cosette Kirsch led the Covenant effort with 22 points followed by Destiny Mergilles who had 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Stats were basically even on the team side with Maryville winning the rebounding battle 45-42 and having five more second-chance points than Covenant.
Maryville falls to 2-5 overall with a 1-2 USA South mark. Covenant now sits at 6-1 overall and an undefeated 3-0 in conference.
The Scots of Maryville College return to the court Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Piedmont. The Lions are 5-2 overall and 1-0 in USA South play. Piedmont most recently took down Huntingdon on the road 59-53 in the Lion's first conference clash.
