Box Score Scots Earn First Win of 2021
MARYVILLE – A first half goal lifted Maryville College on Wednesday night, as the Scots defeated Berry College, 1-0.
MC's defense stood tall, as Bailey Sipos' first-half score was enough for the Scots' first win of the 2021 campaign.
"I thought we had a great start, and we possessed the ball well," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "The trouble we got ourselves into in the first half were just tactical and decision-making errors, but we played really well. We didn't play well in the second half, but we found a way to win. You win a lot of games like that – give up a couple goals and lose 2-1. We battled and ground things out, and that's the way you've got to be as a team – especially for your first win. I think the girls were like, 'We're just going to battle and scrap here.' They did that, and they picked a win against a great team."
Sipos' goal in the 17th minute earned the victory, as she did it unassisted. The Knoxville, Tenn. native split a pair of defenders, firing a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
The score made it 1-0 at the 16:06 mark.
Sophie Turner excelled in goal, as Berry outshot Maryville 19-3 for the match.
The sophomore keeper turned away eight saves on the night to earn the shutout victory.
"She was great," Fernandez said. "She was fantastic. I thought her save on the free kick in the first half was one of the best saves I've seen in a while here. Then, she was just solid in the second half. Overall, I say a great, great win. We've just got to continue to get better as a team. We'll use this one to build on. You beat a good team at your place, you take it and go with it."
Sipos had two of MC's three shots, while Katie O'Brien added the other.
For Berry, it was Maeve McDougal, Vanessa Belanger and Lyndsey Francingues who had three shots each of the Vikings' 19.
Maryville will look to build off the Wednesday win, as the Scots travel Sewanee, Tenn. for the Sewanee Fall Classic this weekend. The Scots take on LeTourneau on Saturday, Sept. 18 before facing the host Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 19. Both matches are slated for a 4:00 p.m. first touch.
