Scots Fall in Season Opener, 8-1
MARYVILLE – Maryville College Men's Tennis opened the 2021-22 campaign, as the Scots played host to Johnson University Wednesday night.
The Royals escaped with an 8-1 win, as MC's Kyle Shaver picked up a singles victory in the 1-seeded singles play.
"I thought Kyle played a good match," Maryville College Head Coach Doug Corbett said. "I thought he played strong, and I thought he stayed within himself. We were working on staying a little more patient, and I thought he did that really well. The men as a whole, we have a lot of work to do. For a lot of these players, it was the first tennis match. Some of them, their experience is really limited. They've come a long way in practice, but they just haven't gotten their feet wet in terms of playing a college tennis match. I think nerves were definitely present, but I'm just telling them to focus on improving and trying to grow. We'll continue to get better, and we'll learn from our mistakes."
Shaver got the victory over Kaden Buchanan, 6-4, 6-0, to start his season off with a 1-0 mark in singles play.
Wednesday's match marked the first while wearing the Orange and Garnet for Corbett, as the first-year head coach took the reins of the Scots' program.
"It means a lot," Corbett said. "I've been waiting a long time to call myself a head coach and be able to lead a team. There were definitely a few butterflies, but overall, I was just really excited. I'm really excited to watch our team play."
