MC Falls to Johnson University, 7-2
MARYVILLE – Maryville College Women's Tennis opened the 2021-22 campaign Wednesday afternoon, as the Scots fell to Johnson University, 7-2.
MC's Melanie Kowalewski and Abby Smither picked up singles victories for the Orange and Garnet, as the Scots look to build going into the remainder of the fall season.
"Melanie was really strong," Maryville College Head Coach Doug Corbett said. "I think she has the potential to play one for us. We gave Diggs the chance up there today, but Melanie looked really good. She looked really good today. At five, Abby just does a great job of playing consistent and putting balls in play. The other girl was having a little of trouble with that. The girl's team as a whole, it's the same thing. There's a few of them that are inexperienced. They just need a little more experience. I thought overall, we fought pretty well. There's just a lot to learn as we grow."
Kowalewski defeated Lauren Murray, 6-2, 6-2, while Smither won her match with the same score.
Wednesday's match marked the first while wearing the Orange and Garnet for Corbett, as the first-year head coach took the reins of the Scots' program.
"It means a lot," Corbett said. "I've been waiting a long time to call myself a head coach and be able to lead a team. There were definitely a few butterflies, but overall, I was just really excited. I'm really excited to watch our team play."
