Box Score Maryville Drops Finale 6-2
ATLANTA – No chance at all that a Sunday loss could put a damper on Maryville's opening weekend at Oglethorpe.
The Scots won the series 2 games to 1 after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader. Oglethorpe bounced back Sunday to take the finale 6-2, scoring three runs in the second and limiting Maryville to five hits.
"We didn't make the adjustments we needed to at the plate," Maryville head coach Clint Helton said. "It's part of the game. But I'm proud of the way we played this weekend. Came out with a lot of energy and the guys were playing as a team.
"We pitched the ball well and gave ourselves chances to win in all three games. We just didn't make the offensive adjustments we needed. We will get better in that area as we continue the early part of this season."
The Scots won 8-1 and 3-1 Saturday, and then they got on the board in the top of the first Sunday. Ian Campbell doubled with one out, stole third and scored on Kolton Hicks' sacrifice fly.
But Oglethorpe reached Maryville's Austin Suttle for three runs in the second on a pair of hits, a walk and a wild pitch. Carson Weir had the key hit for the Stormy Petrels with an RBI-double.
It was a 4-1 game in the eighth when Maryville's Gabe Lopez led off with a single to left. He moved all the way around to third on a couple of errors and then trotted home on a balk by Oglethorpe's Zachary Cox.
Oglethorpe tacked on two more runs in the last of the eighth to salvage the finale of this opening series.
Lopez and Zac Graham contributed two hits apiece for the Scots, with Weir posting a pair of hits for the home side. Suttle took the loss for Maryville before giving way to Nic Mirabella and Grant Lunsford over the final three frames.
"The biggest thing we need is a little more consistency at the plate," Helton said. "But we are close. Now it's on to the next game."
Maryville begins its home schedule Friday in a 3 p.m. contest against Greenville. The Scots and Panthers then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
