Ackerman Continues Hot Streak

MARYVILLE – Maryville split the final DH of the weekend with Greenville on Saturday, with a 5-2 loss in game one and a 10-2 victory in the second.

Game 1: Greenville 5, Maryville 2

Only four batters got a shot for the Panthers in the first inning, which netted them one hit and zero runs.

Jenica Brown was the leadoff batter for the Scots and hit a single up the middle to earn the first hit for MC. Brown then stole second before reaching third on a ground out. A Sara Koonce double to center field scored Brown to give Maryville a 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back doubles kicked off the second for the Scots, but no runners scored. Neither team was able to bring anyone home in both the second and third innings.

The visiting team's bats came alive in the fourth. A Panther was walked to start the inning and then scored when the next batter hit a double to left field. An error and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for Greenville with one out on the board. Maryville walked the next batter which scored one before a single on the next play brought two runners home and gave the Panthers a 4-1 advantage.

Each team added a run in the seventh to make the final 5-2 in favor of Greenville.

"Our team never lost hope we were going to win in the first game," Scots' head coach Leah Kelley said. "Unfortunately, it stayed as hope and didn't materialize on the field.

"Our biggest issue right now is competitiveness. I want us to play with grit and a refuse to lose mentality. We are taking our losses so far as great lessons. Both teams are coming to compete so you can't expect to win against anyone."

Macee Shults took the loss in the circle for the Scots. She threw 39 strikes over 21 batters faced in six innings. Kennedy Henry pitched the final three innings for the Scots and allowed a single earned run.

Kaliyah Hensic went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Koonce and Megan Ackerman each tallied one RBI while Brown and Micayla Clark had a run each.

Game 2: Maryville 10, Greenville 2

After a scoreless first inning in the final game of the doubleheader, consistent offense showed up for both teams.

Brecca Williams reached second with a double before moving to third on a passed ball. Following a ground out, an error by the outfielder in left field brought Williams home.

The third inning opened up with the Panthers tying things up with an RBI double. It was not long before Maryville took the lead back with a Koonce double scoring Brown, after she landed at first on a single, and a Williams single that a pinch-running Annie McCormick scored on.

It was 3-2 in favor of the Scots at the bottom of the sixth after Greenville tacked on an unearned run in the fourth. Seven runners scored for Maryville in the inning, with all but one coming from RBI singles. Brown earned two of those hits with three different Scots notching the rest.

A 10-2 lead at the end of the sixth trigged the run rule and gave Maryville the win.

Jenica Brown went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Brecca Williams was 3-for-4 at the plate and had one RBI, with Emily Hill also adding two RBI.

"I thought Jenica did good leading off for us," said Kelley. "She played some great defense and is aggressive in the box. The great thing about this team is that we have a lot of depth. I can look at my bench and put in some hitters when we need power hitters or slappers. That's what I love about this team."

In the circle, Megan Ackerman earned her fourth win of the season. She struck out three batters and allowed only one earned run in six innings of work.

The Scots move to 6-2 on the season after the weekend's action. Maryville's next four contests are on the road as MC travels to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend for the Grand Slam Triangle Classic that runs Saturday through Sunday.
