Maryville Drops Two at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Scots Fall to Red Hot Tenn. Wesleyan

MARYVILLE – Maryville ran into a hot ballclub Friday and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Tennessee Wesleyan.

The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to 12 games and improved to 13-1 on the season with the 3-2 and 8-0 victories. The second game was shortened to six innings by the run rule.

The first game was an excellent matchup, with Maryville breaking in front on a Sara Koonce solo home run in the first inning. Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead in the fourth on Loryn Sherwood's two-run homer, but then the Scots had a royal chance to pull even in the bottom of the fourth.

Kaitlin Woodruff led off the Maryville half with a double down the left field line. Koonce followed with a liner over the bag at first and she scooted all the way around to third for her first triple of the season. But Wesleyan's Baylie Davis forced a pop out and two strikeouts to strand Koonce at third in what turned out to be the game's deciding moment.

Davis (1-0) struck out 10 over five innings for her first victory of the season. Cheyenne Strong came on and pitched a perfect two innings to record her first save. Megan Ackerman went the distance for the Scots, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five without allowing a walk, but she took the tough loss and dropped to 5-2.

Woodruff's double and Koonce's two extra-base hits accounted for all the Maryville offense in Game 1. Malyssa Jeter had two hits for the Bulldogs.

In Game 2, Tennessee Wesleyan twirler Madison Stott was the story, allowing just two hits and one walk over six innings while striking out four. Stott improved to 6-1 on the season. Macee Shults (2-3) took the loss after allowing a pair of two-run homers during her two innings of work, with Kennedy Henry pitching the final four frames.

Two-run homers were the Tennessee Wesleyan ticket in the nightcap, with Emily Mikkola connecting in the first inning, Hallie DeArman in the second and Allee West in the sixth. Haley Hinshaw's two-run double later in the sixth inning capped the scoring and made it an 8-0 game.

Woodruff and Jenica Brown both had singles for the Scots, who were outhit 11-2.

Florida Event Starts Tuesday

Maryville, now 7-5, takes advantage of Spring Break to compete in the Spring Games Tournament in Central Florida. Maryville opponents during the three-day event taking place in Leesburg and Clermont are Ripon and Loras on Tuesday, Bethel (Minnesota) and Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday, and Amherst and Washington (Maryland) on Thursday.
