Back Home Next Weekend for Pair
EMORY, Va. – Maryville stepped up in class to open its spring schedule and dropped a 7-0 decision at Emory & Henry on Saturday.
The teams played by Division II scoring rules, which meant doubles combined for just one point.
Eliza Cheshire took her singles match to a third set after winning the opening set 7-5. Abby Smither lost her second set 6-4 and Abby Diggs lost her second set 6-2. Diggs and Melanie Kowakewski teamed at No. 1 doubles, with Cheshire and Elizabeth Schwaiko at No. 2 doubles.
"We played our first matches of the year against a good opponent," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "It was good for our student-athletes to get exposed to that level of play. There were some bright spots, but plenty to work on in preparation for a big weekend next week."
The Scots played against a Division II opponent for the second time in 2021-22, with Virginia-Wise being the other back on Oct. 2.
Maryville is home Friday for an exhibition match against Southwest Virginia Community College, followed by a home Saturday date versus Ferrum. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.
