Bowers, Carlton Lead in Hits
ATLANTA – The first series loss of the year for Mayville came at the hands of Emory in a 5-2 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader followed by an 8-3 loss in game two.
The Scots fall to 6-3 on the season while the Eagles move to 8-6.
Game 1: Emory 5, Maryville 2
Maryville led from the top of the third to the bottom of the sixth thanks to solid showings for the Scots in the third and fourth innings.
A ground out gave the Scots an out after the first batter in the top of the third. Zach Fritts was next to the plate and singled on a bunt to the pitcher. After Fritts stole both second and third, a Max Bowers double down the left-field line brought the junior home to score the first Maryville run.
In the top of the fourth, Kasey Ross led off and reached second due to a throwing error by the third baseman. The Eagles' miscues continued as Kendall Catlett was hit by a pitch during the next at-bat. Jimmy Meredith moved runners to second and third with a sacrifice fly before a Kolton Hicks ground out to the shortstop scored Ross.
Emory answered back in the fourth with a run and scored at least one run in every inning they took the plate after, with the exception of the fifth.
The winning run for the Eagles came in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back errors at short for the Scots placed a runner at second. A sacrifice bunt followed by a sacrifice fly scored the winning run with another coming on a wild pitch.
Bryce Leonhardt took his first loss on the mound for Maryville. He struck out four batters and allowed two earned runs over 89 pitches. Damian Lusby pitched one inning for the Scots and allowed one hit and one run.
Bowers had two hits and was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a double. Hicks notched the other RBI for the Scots, while Ross and Fritts scored the runs for the visiting team. Fritts was also responsible for a game-high two stolen bases.
Game 2: Emory 8, Maryville 3
Game two of the doubleheader started out with Maryville again being the first team to post a run. Nelson Smith reached first on a single to right field and moved into scoring position thanks to Christian Carlton being walked. After a wild pitch moved the runners ahead one more base, Smith scored on a Zach Graham ground out to second
Two scoreless innings followed before the Scots scored their final runs of the game. Carlton reached base on a single and scored after finding second on a wild pitch and reaching home on a Catlett single. Catlett scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly from Peyton Milam.
Emory wasted no time taking the lead, with four runs coming in the bottom of the fourth. The home team put up four more runs to go up 8-3.
The Scots battled and loaded the bases in the top of the ninth thanks to two walks, a Meredith single, and a wild pitch. A pitching change for the Eagles followed and the new arm sat down the next three Maryville batters to take the win.
Four pitchers saw action for the Scots with Chris Arbuthnot getting the start. Arbuthnot put in five innings of work for Maryville and now sits with a 2-1 record on the year.
Carlton went 2-for-3 with a run and a team-leading two hits. Graham, Catlett, and Milam each had an RBI.
The series concludes tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. inside Chappell Park.
