Maryville Drops 9-0 Match to Franklin
MARYVILLE – Maryville came close to taking No. 1 doubles and singles wins, but ultimately fell 9-0 to Franklin College in Sunday's spring home opener.
"I think today was an improvement from yesterday," Maryville head coach Doug Corbett said. "We played much better in singles. There were some pressure-filled situations and we need to learn to handle those better. We are going to learn to believe in ourselves and get better."
The No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Shaver and Cooper Newman for the Scots dropped behind early but fought back to fall just short in an 8-5 loss. Despite falling, coach Corbett said he is proud of the effort displayed by the duo.
"Our No. 1 doubles team played really well," said Corbett. "They went down 7-2 and they never stopped battling. We always talk as a team about how we are never out of it, and I am proud of Kyle and Cooper for taking that to heart."
Shaver also picked up a team-high eight set wins in the No. 1 singles spot. Ben Wyrick, Jonah Hedges, and Keshawn Haynes each earned two wins apiece in solo action.
Maryville returns to action on Friday afternoon in an exhibition against Southwest Virginia Community College. The Scots return to regular-season play Saturday when they host Ferrum at 1 p.m.
