Box Score Scots Lose 8-5 to Emory; Home Tuesday
ATLANTA – Maryville scored first and made a game of it late, but Emory completed a three-game weekend sweep with an 8-5 decision Sunday.
The Scots outhit Emory 12-7, but Maryville pitching issued nine bases on balls and hit an addition two batters. Five of those baserunners came around to score, accounting for the majority of the seven runs tallied by the Eagles over the first four innings for a 7-2 lead.
Maryville struck back for three runs in the seventh to close the margin to 7-5. Gabe Lopez and Nelson Smith singled and then moved up 90 feet on a double steal. Christian Carlton followed with an RBI-single to left that plated Lopez.
Zac Graham kept the inning going with a single through the right side that scored Smith, with Carlton advancing to third. Carlton then crossed on a groundout by Kendall Catlett.
Maryville put the tying runners aboard in the eighth, only to have the next three batters go down swinging. The Scots began the ninth with Carlton being hit by a pitch. But a double play and a deep fly to center ended the game.
Austin Suttle dropped to 1-2 on the season after allowing five runs over his three innings. Damian Lusby had the most effective relief outing for Maryville, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Matthew Culbert picked up the win in relief for Emory, which improved to 9-6. The Scots are now 6-4.
Smith led the visitors with three hits in five trips to the plate. The senior outfielder also stole four bases to take over the team lead. Carlton went 2-for-4 and improved his team-best average to .414. Graham was 2-for-5 for his third multihit game of the season, and Lopez finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two driven in.
Zeke Diamond's three-run double that highlighted Emory's four-run fourth was the deciding hit for the Eagles.
The Scots are home Tuesday to take on Berry in a single game. First pitch is 3 p.m.
