Scots Earn Big 6-3 Win
MARYVILLE – Maryville kept the postseason hopes alive with a 6-3 comeback win over visiting Berea College.
"Really proud of our women tonight," Scots' head coach Doug Corbett said. "Being down 2-0 to start the match comes with increased pressure. We had those nerves early but they overcame it in a big way."
Doubles play was key in the win for Maryville. The Scots won both matches in which they fielded doubles teams. Melanie Kowalewski and Abby Diggs won their third match as a pair with an 8-4 decision in the No. 1 slot. Eliza Cheshire and partner Elizabeth Shwaiko won the No. 2 match 8-2.
Four of the five singles matchups that were contested went the way of the Scots. Kowalewski moved to an even 5-5 on the season with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the top singles spot. Shwaiko won her third singles match in a row with a 6-0, 6-2 performance on Friday.
Cheshire and Abby Smither rounded out the day with solo wins for Maryville.
"Just like the men, we set the tone with our doubles performance," said Corbett. "These ladies work so hard in practice. Shout out to Eliza Cheshire for clinching the overall match!"
The win puts the Scots in the hunt for a spot in the USA South tournament. Tomorrow MC will host Agnes Scott in a pivotal Senior Day match at 3 p.m. The winner of the match will lock up a tournament berth in the West Division.
