MARYVILLE – Maryville opened its abbreviated fall women's tennis season with an impressive showing at the Piedmont Invitational.
The Scots won all four of their doubles matches after going 5-5 in singles matches. The format was not team-oriented like the spring matches but is a chance for student-athletes to compete against conference competition in the off-season.
"This event was a great opportunity to get lots of experience thanks to the format of playing four separate pro-sets," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "We have a very young team, as three freshmen and two sophomores competed. I was impressed with our performance in what were the first college matches for those three student-athletes.
"We handled the nerves very well, held our own and even went 4-0 in doubles. The results bode well for the upcoming seasons!"
Sophomore
Abby Diggs went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles after teaming with
Elizabeth Shwaiko for wins over Piedmont and Methodist. First-years
Katelyn Cook and
Courtlyn Walsh were the other doubles pairing that went 2-0 with a pair of victories over Piedmont. They each went 1-1 in their singles matches, while freshman
Olivia Reagan rounded out the lineup by going 1-1 in singles.
The Scot men's and women's teams have two head-to-head matches this fall. Both teams host Emory & Henry on Sept. 23 and visit Johnson on Oct. 5.
