EAST RIDGE, TENN. – Maryville opened the 2023 season in dual meet against in-state rival Sewanee on Friday at Camp Jordan.
The Scots lost 21-40 but had four athletes establish new personal records on the day. Despite the tough loss, head coach Kaitlyn Carringer-Adams was impressed with what she saw on the course from her athletes.
"Today's race was a great start to the season and a good step towards our goals with 7 PRs overall (men's and women's)," Carringer-Adams said. "This is just the beginning of the season and I already saw lots of growth and improvement from these runners, not just as individuals, but also as a team."
Steve Cope recorded the top finish of the day for MC, placing second in the race run with a time of 17:26.45. He finished behind first-place Alex Coley who ran a 16:58.23 to lock down the top spot.

Gustavo Hernandez,
Sam Cocchia, and
Osvaldo Contreras each recorded new personal bests in this meet. Gentry finished in fifth place with a time of 19:02.09. Hernandez recorded a 20:29.52 and finished in 10th place. Cocchia ran a 21:09.72 and finished in 11th place while Contreras finished 14th with a time 24:31.23
"I am very proud of the effort and especially the teamwork at today's race and can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds for us," Carringer-Adams said.
Maryville's next meet is the Walters State Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9 in Morristown, Tennessee.
