Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. – Maryville opened its 2024-25 season in a big way this weekend with an impressive showing at the Piedmont Invitational.
The Scots won a combined 19 of 27 matches played in doubles and singles against individuals from Methodist, Columbia College, Agnes Scott, Sweet Briar and the host Lions. The Scots were particularly efficient during Friday's doubles and singles when they won 14 out of 15 matches.
"We got a lot of match experience, which is especially important considering half of our women had never played a college tennis match," Maryville head coach
Doug Corbett said. "The doubles we opened with versus Methodist was probably the best we have looked collectively since I have been here. Given there is still a lot to learn and work on, this was exciting to see.
"The momentum carried through the weekend, as we went 19-8 overall during the invite – including several comeback wins. Proud to see that we never give up regardless of the situation."
During doubles,
Abby Diggs and
Alyssa Smith trailed 4-1 in their Friday match before rallying to win five straight games for a 6-4 victory. And on Saturday,
Elizabeth Shwaiko and
Calliana Kondolios faced a 5-2 hole but rallied for a 7-6 victory after prevailing 7-1 in the tiebreaker. Singles comebacks saw Smith and
Jasmine Muecke turn the tables on their Piedmont opponents by each rallying from a set down for impressive victories.
On Saturday, the Scots went 3-3 in singles against defending conference champion Piedmont before finishing 2-4 in doubles competition.
The Maryville men's and women's teams are back in action this weekend at the Huntingdon Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Montgomery.
