Tennis Builds on Positive Momentum for Piedmont Invitational

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - In another scrimmage, Maryville College triumphed against Indiana-Southeast yet again in a competitive display, with 3 singles matches containing tiebreaks.

Maryville roared to a commanding lead, grabbing the doubles point with James Smith and Steven Fitzsimmons blanking their opponents 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Eli Cauthorn and Gabriel Villalonga Serra winning convincingly 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

"It was good to see a couple routine wins in doubles, which takes consistent focus and execution," Coach Doug Corbett said.

That positive momentum from doubles carried on through singles. Sergio Balsamo was the first to win, taking his match 6-4 6-3 after coming back from an 0-4 deficit in the first set. Field Myatt then put Maryville up 3-1, winning a nailbiter 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 10-8 in a two and a half hour match. Eric Vornhagen sealed the deal, clinching the match with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) scoreline. Cauthorn and Fitzsimmons added victories as insurance, with Cauthorn dropping 5 games in a 6-3 6-2 win and Fitzsimmons rolling to a 6-3 6-1 success.

"We have great momentum heading into our final fall competition in a few weeks," Corbett said.

Men's tennis gears up for the Piedmont Invitational, at Piedmont College on October 24th through October 25th. It's their last event of the fall season.
