Scots Run to Record-Breaking Day at South Region Showdown

SALEM, Va. - Maryville College Cross Country delivered a standout performance at the South Region Showdown, as both the men's and women's teams turned in historic results and set the tone for a strong finish to their 2025 season.

Women's Team Shines with Seven Personal Records

Facing a deep field that included NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and JUCO programs, the Maryville women set out to chase personal records—and they did just that. Seven of the eight Scots runners posted career-best times, helping the team drop its average to 26:49, the program's best since 2019.

Head Coach Kaitlyn Carringer-Adams praised the performance, noting the historical significance:

"Our women brought down their team time average to 26:49, which is the best Maryville has run since 2019. They're only 28 seconds away from breaking into the top five team averages in school history. We're going to keep this momentum going into conference and regionals."

The day was highlighted by milestone performances from Megan Shinn and Addison Goodwin, who now rank #6 and #8, respectively, among Maryville's all-time 6K performers.

Goodwin credited the atmosphere and support for her PR run:

"It was a really flat course which made for lots of great PRs. It got hot as the race went on, but having the boys team there to cheer me on is what got me to the finish line with a PR!"

Sophomore Charlotte Wilson echoed that energy:

"I ran a PR today at Roanoke! I really enjoyed the course—it was really fun! There were a lot of teams and a lot of cheering from the guys, which was really encouraging."

Men's Team Smashes School Record

The Scots men's team followed suit with a massive performance of their own, breaking the school record for team average time by nearly a full minute—from 29:06 to 28:07—in just one week. Every runner posted either a season-best or personal record, and all five of Maryville's top runners climbed into the program's all-time top 10 list.

Coach Carringer-Adams emphasized how the group's pack running made the difference:

"They did a phenomenal job of running as a pack like we've been practicing. The majority of our men ran their 5K PRs within the race, which scared some of them and myself, but they held on and ran great 8K times today. Our team isn't done yet—we plan to keep pushing and build on this momentum."

Senior Paul Kanios celebrated the team's collective effort:

"I'm very proud of all of our boys. Everyone left everything they had on the course, and it showed. This is just the boost we needed—people better look out for us at Conference."

Teammate James LeNeve added:

"This is the best race we've run as a team by using each other to pace and pick off other runners. This is exactly what coach has been preaching, and I'm proud of how tough we stayed and how much we believed in each other."

With both teams riding strong momentum and rewriting program record books, Maryville heads into the Collegiate Conference of the South Championships and Regional meets poised for one of the best finishes in school history.
