Box Score 2 GAME ONE
RALEIGH, N.C. – Maryville started off day two of the Raleigh Volleyball Tournament with a dominant 3-0 win against Gordon College. This win increases the Scots' record to 6-0-0, and drops the Lions' record to 4-3-0, 0-0-0.
Maryville kicked off play with two service aces and a kill, quickly earning a 4-1 lead over Gordon. Multiple kills from
Ruby Walton and
Kylie Wilhelmi upped the Score to 10-5, and multiple kills featuring
Megan Fairburn and Wilhelmi left Gordon behind, 17-9. Wilhelmi added three more kills, and
Cailin Mastropasqua and Fairburn added one-a-piece, winning the first set 25-19.
Walton opened up set two with a kill before Wilhelmi added a second for a 2-1 lead. Kills from Wilhelmi,
Audry Neil, and
Ava George Wilber increased their lead to 11-4. With the continued assault from Mastropasqua, Walton, Wilber, and Fairburn, the Scots buried the Lions 25-9. During set two, Gordon only scored two points on their own accord, with the other seven coming being allotted by Scots errors.
Maryville started the third set off with a service ace from
Katelyn Eldred and a kill by Mastropasqua, leading 3-0. Further kills from Mastropasqua, Wilhelmi, and
Kyrah Bowles, plus errors from the Lions granted the Scots a larger lead, 9-1. Despite attempting to claw back, Gordon was not able to piece any large runs together, and the Scots made sure to take advantage of that. Towards the end of the set,
Maddie Bouvier was featured with two service aces, and a kill from Walton and two from Wilhelmi closed out the set, 25-13.
The Scots had a hitting percentage of .280, led by Wilhelmi with 12 kills, Walton with eight, and Mastropasqua with six. Fairburn led with 17 assists, and Wilhelmi posted 12 digs. Eldred tallied four aces across the sets, and Walton totaled four blocks.
GAME TWO
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Scots' win streak finally comes to an end after a tough loss against Virginia Wesleyan, concluding the 2025 Raleigh Volleyball Tournament. This loss drops Maryville to 6-1-0, 0-0-0, and increases Virginia Wesleyan's record to 7-0-0, 0-0-0.
The Marlins started off the first set after a Maryville service error. Each team was able to keep each other on a short leash, with neither team being able to pull ahead for long. The Scots were finally able to piece together some points, including two kills from
Kylie Wilhelmi, and a whopping six service aces from
Ruby Walton. Maryville was able to mute Virginia Wesleyan, 25-16.
Wilhelmi kicked off the second set with a kill, but the Marlins quickly retaliated with points of their own. Despite back-and-forth play, Virginia Wesleyan was able to pull ahead after a five-point run, lading the set 8-12. Although Kills from
Cailin Mastropasqua and Walton added to Maryville's cause, the Marlins were able to win set two off a service error.
Maryville took a 4-0 lead right from the jump, forcing Virginia Wesleyan to dig back into the game. After a Maryville service error, the Marlins were able to gain momentum, going on a four-point scoring streak. Maryville was able to come back, going on a 11-4 run, upping the score to 18-11. Virginia Wesleyan managed to respond with an 11 point scoring run of their own, partially due to Maryville errors, awarding the Marlins with the lead, 22-19. After a Marlin kill and a Maryville block error, Virginia Wesleyan took the third set, 26-24.
Set four started with back-and-forth play once again, but the Scots were able to pull ahead momentarily, 9-7. Virginia Wesleyan went on a 11-3 run to quickly reclaim the lead from the Scots, 16-11. Kills from Mastropasqua, Wilhelmi, Wilber, and Walton all helped Maryville in the set, but a Maryville service error, and a kill by the Marlins muted the Scots, 25-19.
Despite having a higher hitting percentage and fewer errors, Virginia Wesleyan earned the win 7-1. Wilhelmi led the Scots in kills with 18, followed by Mastropasqua with 14 and Walton with nine. Notably,
Dakota Vaiese led with 20 assist, and
Megan Fairburn (17) followed closely behind.
The Scots are back in action on Tuesday, September 9
th at 6:00 PM CST against the Sewanee Tigers.
