Box Score The Cody Church era as Maryville College's new head baseball coach got off to a great start with his Fighting Scots diamondmen defeating Hiwassee College 12-5 in their 2015 season opener.
After MC's Jeremy Ibarra shut down the Tigers in order in the first, the Scots posted five runs in their first at bat of the season. Key RBI's by Nick Dean, Zack Blonder, and Chris Ervin gave Maryville a 3-0 advantage until designated hitter Greg Vourloumis blasted a one-out homerun over the left field wall to make the score 5-0.
MC added a pair of runs in the second inning on a pair of hits including a Blonder RBI.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third with a Charles Chavis RBI single to right field and a Marc Marsh sacrifice fly.
Maryville tacked on to their lead with an unearned run in the third and a pair of runs in the fourth making the score 10-2. MC took advantage of two Hiwasee miscues in the sixth and eighth innings to finish their scoring on the day.
Randall Coley blasted a solo homer in the seventh for Hiwassee and the Tigers plated a run in each of their final pair of innings.
MC used nine pitchers on the evening with Ibarra getting the win. The staff scattered seven hits while striking out five. Hiwassee's Bryan Woodlief suffered the loss after giving up five earned runs in the first inning.
The Scots offense pounded out 11 hits. Centerfielder Sam Jokerst finished 3-for-4 while Greg Vourloumis added a pair of hits, two runs scored, and two RBI's in four plate appearances. Leadoff hitter Logan Jenkins finished 2-for-3 with four runs scored.
Maryville (1-0) will host Piedmont College for a USA South three-game series beginning on Friday. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 on MC's Scotland Yard.
