Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener

Johnson Prevails Despite Strong Effort from Scots

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - A long awaited women's tennis debut that included the first collegiate matches for many ended with a Johnson University win.

In doubles, freshmen Maggie Hackney and Kaitlyn Redwine fought from a 2-5 deficit to come back and win 7-5 in their set. It was their first win at the collegiate level, but their efforts weren't enough to take the doubles point.

"2-5 comebacks don't happen often, and that's the perfect example of playing smart," Coach Doug Corbett said.

The Scots dropped all of their singles matches, despite many competitive efforts. Redwine scrapped but eventually fell to her opponent 6-3 6-3 in the closest outing of the Scots afternoon.

Despite the loss, there were many positives to take from this match.

"I think we fought, I think we hit lots of good shots, and I think we had a good attitude," Corbett said. "There's no reason to be discouraged, they're a good team with really solid players."

The Scots are looking to refocus on their next match against Indiana-Southeast, on October 12th.
