Box Score Maryville's women's soccer team handled Mary Baldwin, defeating the Flying Squirrels 5-1 in Staunton, VA.
Maryville got on the board when Phoebe Leo headed a ball into the Flying Squirrel net in the 15th minute from Hannah Rector. Fifteen minutes later the Scots would score the eventual game winner when Samantha Turner found the net from 25 yards out. Anna Ericksen would add her first of two assists on the day on the Turner goal. Mary Baldwin would add their only goal of the afternoon to close out the scoring in the first half.
Maryville would pick up the pace scoring three times to ice the game in the second half. All three Scots goals would be scored over a six minute stretch in the second half. Ashley Howarth would score twice in a matter of two minutes. Hannah Rector would add her second assist of the day on the first Howarth goal while Kelsie Kestner would find her way onto the score sheet with an assist on the second. The final goal of the day would go to Alexis Franco with Anna Ericksen picking up her second assist of the day.
Megan Nugent allowed just one goal and picked up her first collegiate win. The Scots dominated the game from beginning to end putting 26 shots on goal to just two for the Flying Squirrels while also attempting 11 more corner kicks.
"We played a solid game today, of course we would have liked to get the shut out but I was pleased with our effort today after a grueling game yesterday," said assistant coach Jon Baker. "We had a complete team effort and got a lot of women in the game to get some work in."
The win brings the Scots to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in USA South action. Maryville will be back in action Wednesday night when they travel to Kentucky to take on Transylvania. Game time is set for 7 pm.
