WINSTON, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan spotted Maryville an early two-run lead, then came back for a 5-3 win Thursday at Fleming Stadium at the USA South Spring Sports Festival. Jason Riley's two-run single for the Bishops (12-19-1, 9-12 USA South) in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie.
Ryan Grant (2-0) went seven innings to get the win, giving up three runs but only one earned. Robert Mondoux threw a scoreless eighth and Dillon Moore retired the Scots (13-16, 8-11 USA South) in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Nick Dean had a home run and drove in two runs for Maryville. Dean hit his second home run of the season and had a sacrifice fly.
Dean's home run to left center gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Wesleyan tied the game in its half of the second. The Bishops loaded the bases with no outs. Kani Upshur grounded out to short, allowing Riley to score. Riley had led off the inning with a single.
The Scots retook the lead with two runs, aided by two Bishop errors in the inning. Dan Oaklief beat out an infield hit and took second when the throw was off the mark. Oaklief came around to score on Garrett Gresham's RBI base hit. Jacob Ashe, who also reached on an error, scored on Dean's sacrifice fly for a 3-1 lead.
Luis Palencia walked with one out. He moved over to third on J.J. Rodriquez's two out hit. Palencia scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 with Rodriquez thrown out trying to score on the play also.
The Bishops loaded the bases on two walks and a hit with one out. Rodriquez walked to force in Hayden Williams with the tying run. Riley broke the tie with a two-run single down the left field line to put the Bishops up 5-3.
