Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team advanced to 22-10 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival North Carolina Wesleyan College on Friday evening on MC's Scotland Yard. The Scots took the series opener 16-8 before a ninth-inning rally propelled them to a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game the MC pitching staff held the Battling Bishops to only nine hits while the Scots offense lit up the scoreboard with 20 hits. A nine-run fifth inning allowed Maryville to pull away for the victory.
MC's Evan Heffner (4-0) earned the win in relief of starter Seth Debity. Heffner tossed 4.1 innings allowing only one hit while striking out four. Zach McGee and Zack May closed the door with a combined three innings of three-hit relief.
Maryville had five players post multiple hit performances to help the Scots' offense. Nick Dean was 4-for-6 with a triple, two runs scored, and three RBI. Andrew Henry went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while John McDermott finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Austin Watters and Jesse Crisp added a pair of hits and combined for 5 runs driven in.
In the final game of the day Maryville's Jeremy Ibarra and NC Wesleyan's Robert Mondoux battled on the mound for over six innings. Mondoux left with a 3-2 advantage but the Scots rallied off Bishop reliever George Moore for a walk0off victory.
An RBI opposite field single gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead in the third.
Maryville took a 2-1 in the 4th inning when Dean doubled to left center scoring Andrew Henry. Watters drove Dean home with a single to right field.
With two-outs in the seventh, the Bishops took advantage of a catcher's interference call to push a pair of unearned runs across the plate and chase Ibarra. MC's Joe Jones (1-0) was called upon to throw 2.1 innings of one-hit relief to set up Maryville's ninth inning heroics.
The Scots' Jesse Crisp led off the ninth with a single up the middle. John McDermott legged out an infield single before Evan Ezell sacrificed the pair into scoring position. The Bishops intentionally walked David Shiplett before Sam Jokerst was hit by a pitch tying the game. Nick Dean drove in McDermott with the game-winning run when the shortstop could not field the game ending groundball.
NC Wesleyan falls to 7-23 on the season while the Scots advance to 16-10 in league play. The final game of the series is scheduled for a noon start on Saturday at MC's Scotland Yard.
