Late goal lifts Salem past Maryville 2-1 in double-overtime

Salem College's Chaniece Moss took a pass from Mary Ormsby and hit the back of the net with 46-seconds remaining in double-overtime to lift the Spirits past the Scots 2-1 in women's soccer on Friday evening.

 

Maryville College took an early lead in the first period when Sarah Wickman connected on a free kick just outside the box past Salem keeper Hannah Wagner.

 

Salem's Morgan Canepa stole a pass and dribbled from the right side to deposit an unassisted goal past MC keeper Mandy Marshall.

 

In a physical game that featured 35 total fouls, both squads finished with a dozen shots at the end of regulation.

 

They battled to a scoreless tie after the first the first overtime period and Maryville looked like they were going to finish in a flurry with four late attacks at point-blank range, but with the game winding down in the final minute Ormsby saw the MC keeper attack her advance and she dished to Moss for the game winner.

 

Sarah Wickman, Miranda Lukas, and Hannah Clothier led MC's offensive attack with all eight shots on goal for the Scots.

 

Maryville falls to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in USA South action. The victory advances Salem to 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in league play.
