Larry F. Stephens was a two-sport athlete, playing both football and baseball during his time at Maryville College. A free safety on the football field and a shortstop on the diamond, Stephens was a four-year starter in both sports. He was named an All-American honorable mention in 1971 and was a co-captain of the baseball team in his junior and senior years. A 1972 Maryville College grad, Stephens went on to earn his master's in education at the University of Tennessee. He later returned to his alma mater to coach football and work as the Associate Athletics Director at the College. Stephens' other coaching endeavors include time as an assistant football coach at Eastern Kentucky, defensive coordinator at Elon, and head coach at Powell High School in the Knoxville area. He spent eight years (two terms) as a Knox County Commissioner and currently serves as board chair for the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce.
